What is Whole Body Cryotherapy?

With whole body cryotherapy (WBC) the body is exposed to low temperatures (-166 to -202F). The client stands in a cryosauna for a short duration, ~ 3 minutes, which lowers the client’s skin surface temperature significantly. This short time exposure triggers a systemic anti-inflammatory response, increases oxygen in the blood, release of toxins and endorphins.

What do you wear during the treatment?

Clients are provided robe, slippers, socks, and gloves. The robe will be removed once the client has entered the cryosauna. For women, underwear and bra are optional. For men, shorts must be worn.

What to expect on your first visit?

Clients will be asked to fill out some paperwork. Then the client will be shown to a dressing room where they will change into the provided robe, socks, slippers and gloves. The client can leave their personal possessions in the locked dressing room. The client will then proceed to the cryosauna. Once in the cryosauna the client removes the robe. The session lasts about 3 minutes. A staff member is with the client right outside the cryosauna during the session. The client will put back on the robe and be escorted back to their dressing room.

Joan’s Story

Our founder, Joan Funk, enjoyed the benefits of whole body cryotherapy, but had to drive from Huntsville to Birmingham to do so. The treatments gave her such relief she decided to bring cryotherapy to North Alabama herself.  Cryotherapy Birmingham was a great resource to Joan as she began her dream of opening Cryotherapy North Alabama. The location has been open since Fall of 2015.

Joan is also very involved in the Huntsville community as an artist and animal lover. She is an active member of the Huntsville Art League and a volunteer with Friends of Rescue. The art and images you might find in our clinic show the great beauty found in the local art and animal community.
